दानानां च विधिं श्रुत्वा च्छिन्नर्मार्थसंशय: । यदन्यदकरोद् विप्र तन्मे शंसितुमरहसि
dānānāṃ ca vidhiṃ śrutvā chinnārthasaṃśayaḥ | yad anyad akarod vipra tan me śaṃsitum arhasi ||
Sinabi ni Janamejaya: “Matapos kong marinig ang wastong mga tuntunin at paraan ng pagbibigay-kawanggawa, napawi na ang aking mga pag-aalinlangan sa kahulugan nito. O brāhmaṇa, isalaysay mo sa akin kung ano pa ang ginawa niya—ikaw ang nararapat na magkuwento nito sa akin.”
जनमेजय उवाच
That charity (dāna) is governed by vidhi—proper rules and intention—and that understanding these principles removes confusion about its true purpose; one should then seek further exemplary conduct to complete the ethical picture.
King Janamejaya tells the brāhmaṇa narrator that his doubts have been resolved after hearing the procedure of giving, and he requests the next part of the account—what further actions were performed by the person under discussion.
