Discerning Dharma in Accord with Time
Non-violence (ahiṁsā)—specifically, freeing oneself from the harming of living beings—is presented as the foundational discipline that leads to righteous character and even long life; it is endorsed as an authoritative dharmic path taught by Brahmā.
Maheśvara is instructing his listener on a dharmic ‘path’ associated with virtuous, long-lived people, grounding the teaching in divine authority by stating that Brahmā proclaimed it, and identifying renunciation of violence toward all beings as the means to attain it.
