Ahiṃsā as Threefold Restraint (Mind–Speech–Action) and the Ethics of Consumption

ये पापानि नराः कृत्वा निरस्यन्ति व्रतैः सदा । सुखदुःखसमायुक्ता व्यथितास्ते भवन्त्युत

ye pāpāni narāḥ kṛtvā nirasyanti vrataiḥ sadā | sukhaduḥkhasamāyuktā vyathitās te bhavanty uta ||

Sinabi ni Yudhiṣṭhira: “Yaong mga taong gumagawa ng kasalanan at pagkatapos ay palagiang nagsisikap na itaboy ito sa pamamagitan ng mga panata at pagtalima sa mga pag-aayuno at ritwal ay nananatiling nakagapos sa salit-salit na ligaya at pighati; sila’y patuloy na pinahihirapan. Ang kaguluhan sa loob ay hindi nakakakita ng matatag na pahingahan, sapagkat ang pagtubos na walang tunay na pagbabago ay iniiwan ang ugat ng kasamaan na buháy.”
