Duḥṣanta–Śakuntalā: Gandharva Marriage and Succession Condition
महादेवान्तकाभ्यां च कामात् क्रोधाच्च भारत । एकत्वमुपपन्नानां जज्ञे शूर: परंतप:,भारत! उनके यहाँ महादेव, यम, काम और क्रोधके सम्मिलित अंशसे शत्रुसंतापी शूरवीर अश्वत्थामाका जन्म हुआ, जो इस पृथ्वीपर महापराक्रमी और शत्रुपक्षका संहार करनेवाला वीर था। राजन! उसके नेत्र कमलदलके समान विशाल थे
vaiśampāyana uvāca |
mahādevāntakābhyāṃ ca kāmāt krodhāc ca bhārata |
ekatvam upapannānāṃ jajñe śūraḥ parantapaḥ ||
Wika ni Vaiśampāyana: O Bhārata, mula sa pinagsamang mga bahagi—na naging iisang kabuuan—ni Mahādeva at Antaka (Yama), at gayundin ni Kāma at Krodha, isinilang ang isang bayani, tagasunog ng mga kaaway. Ipinapakita ng taludtod ang kanyang kapanganakan bilang pagsasanib ng kapangyarihang ascetiko at higpit ng kamatayan, kasama ng pagnanasa at poot—isang likas na mandirigmang may dakilang lakas ngunit may panganib ng matitinding damdamin.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse implies that a person’s nature can be understood as a composite of forces—divine archetypes and inner impulses. Great strength (Mahādeva/Antaka) may coexist with destabilizing passions (kāma/krodha), highlighting an ethical tension: power without restraint can become destructive.
Vaiśampāyana describes the birth of a formidable warrior as arising from the unified combined ‘portions’ of Mahādeva, Antaka (Yama), Kāma, and Krodha, emphasizing his fearsome, enemy-scorching disposition.
