Ādi-parva Adhyāya 3 — Janamejaya’s Rite, Dhaumya’s Parīkṣā, and Uttanka’s Kuṇḍala Quest (सर्पसत्रप्रस्तावना–गुरुपरीक्षा–उत्तङ्कोपाख्यान)

हिरण्मयौ शकुनी साम्परायौ नासत्यदस्रौ सुनसौ वै जयन्तौ । शुक्ल वयन्तौ तरसा सुवेमा- वधिव्ययन्तावसितं विवस्वत:,सुनहरे पंखवाले दो सुन्दर विहंगमोंकी भाँति आप दोनों बन्धु बड़े सुन्दर हैं। पारलौकिक उन्नतिके साधनोंसे सम्पन्न हैं। नासत्य तथा दख्न--ये दोनों आपके नाम हैं। आपकी नासिका बड़ी सुन्दर है। आप दोनों निश्चितरूपसे विजय प्राप्त करनेवाले हैं। आप ही विवस्वान्‌ (सूर्यदेव)-के सुपुत्र हैं; अतः स्वयं ही सूर्यरूपमें स्थित हो दिन तथा रात्रिरूप काले तन्‍्तुओंसे संवत्सररूप वस्त्र बुनते रहते हैं और उस वस्त्रद्वारा वेगपूर्वक देवयान और पितृयान नामक सुन्दर मार्गोको प्राप्त कराते हैं

hiraṇmayau śakunī sāmparāyau nāsatyadasrau sunasau vai jayantau | śuklaṃ vayantau tarasā suvema-adhivyayantāv asitaṃ vivasvataḥ ||

Wika ni Rāma: “Kayong dalawa ay tulad ng mga ginintuang ibong marikit, pinagkalooban ng mga paraan tungo sa mapalad na pag-unlad lampas sa buhay na ito. Kayo si Nāsatya at Dasra—laging nagwawagi, may maaliwalas at kaaya-ayang anyo. Bilang mga anak ni Vivasvān (ang Diyos-Araw), kayo mismo’y nananatili sa anyong solar, at mabilis na hinahabi ang taon na parang kasuotan gamit ang madidilim na hibla ng gabi at ang maningning na hibla ng araw; at sa kaayusang nahabi, inihahatid ninyo ang mga nilalang sa mapalad na mga landas na tinatawag na Devayāna at Pitṛyāna.”

Educational Q&A

The verse presents a dharmic vision of cosmic order: day and night, governed by the solar principle, sustain time (the year) and thereby enable the proper onward movement of beings—symbolized as access to Devayāna (the divine path) and Pitṛyāna (the ancestral path). Ethical life aligns with this ordered rhythm and aims at auspicious post-mortem progress.
