आस्तीककथाप्रारम्भः — Beginning of the Āstīka Narrative

वायुकिरुवाच जरत्कारो जरत्कारु: स्वसेयमनुजा मम | प्रतिगृह्नीष्व भार्यार्थे मया दत्तां सुमध्यमाम् । त्वदर्थ रक्षिता पूर्व प्रतीच्छेमां द्विजोत्तम,वासुकिने कहा--जरत्कारो! यह मेरी छोटी बहिन जरत्कारु नामसे ही प्रसिद्ध है। इस सुन्दर कटिप्रदेशवाली कुमारीको पत्नी बनानेके लिये मैंने स्वयं आपकी सेवामें समर्पित किया है। इसे स्वीकार कीजिये। द्विजश्रेष्ठी यह बहुत पहलेसे आपहीके लिये सुरक्षित रखी गयी है, अतः इसे ग्रहण करें
vāyukir uvāca jaratkāro jaratkāruḥ svaseyam anujā mama | pratigṛhṇīṣva bhāryārthe mayā dattāṃ sumadhyamām | tvadarthaṃ rakṣitā pūrvaṃ pratīcchemāṃ dvijottama ||
Wika ni Vāyuki: “O Jaratkāru, ito ang aking sariling nakababatang kapatid na babae, na kilala sa pangalang Jaratkāru. Ako mismo ang nag-aalay sa kanya sa iyo upang tanggapin bilang asawa—siya’y may payat na baywang at karapat-dapat. Matagal na siyang iningatan at ipinagtanggol para sa iyo lamang; kaya, O pinakadakila sa mga dalawang-bes na isinilang, tanggapin mo siya.”
शौनक उवाच
The verse highlights dharma expressed through responsible alliance and timely marriage: a family (here, the Nāga side) fulfills its obligation by offering a suitable bride, while the ascetic is urged to accept a duty that serves a larger purpose (continuity of lineage and protection of dependents).
Vāyuki formally presents his younger sister, named Jaratkāru, to the sage Jaratkāru as a bride, emphasizing that she has been reserved and safeguarded specifically for him and requesting that he accept her.
