आस्तीक-उपाख्यान-प्रस्तावः | Introduction to the Āstīka Narrative
सनाम्नी या भवित्री मे दित्सिता चैव बन्धुभि: | भैक्ष्यवत्तामहं कन्यामुपयंस्ये विधानतः,(वह शर्त यों है--) जिस कनन््याका नाम मेरे नामके ही समान हो, जिसे उसके भाई-बन्धु स्वयं मुझे देनेकी इच्छासे रखते हों और जो भिक्षाकी भाँति स्वयं प्राप्त हुई हो, उसी कन्याका मैं शास्त्रीय विधिके अनुसार पाणिग्रहण करूँगा
sanāmnī yā bhavitrī me ditsitā caiva bandhubhiḥ | bhaikṣyavattām ahaṃ kanyām upayaṃsye vidhānataḥ ||
Wika ni Śaunaka: “Ayon sa tuntuning pangkasulatan, tatanggapin ko lamang bilang asawa ang dalagang kapangalan ko, na kusang-loob na ibibigay sa akin ng kanyang mga kamag-anak, at darating sa akin na wari’y kaloob na parang limos—hindi hinanap at malayang inihandog.”
शौनक उवाच
The verse emphasizes restraint and dharmic propriety in marriage: the speaker sets conditions that the bride be freely offered by her family and that the union be performed according to prescribed ritual law, highlighting consent, social legitimacy, and adherence to vidhi.
Śaunaka states a specific vow about whom he will marry: a maiden sharing his name, willingly given by her relatives, and obtained without active seeking—‘like alms’—after which he will perform the marriage in the proper scriptural manner.
