Āstravidyā-Pradarśana: The Kuru Princes’ Public Demonstration of Arms (आस्त्रविद्या-प्रदर्शनम्)
idaṃ tu me mahad duḥkhaṃ tulyatāyām aputratā | diṣṭyā tv idānīṃ bhartur me kuntyām apy asti santatiḥ ||
The verse highlights a dharmic tension within family life: personal grief and comparison (childlessness despite equal marital status) is acknowledged, yet it is tempered by acceptance and gratitude that the household’s lineage is secured through another wife. It models restraint—sorrow without malice—and recognition of fortune (diṣṭyā) in outcomes.
A wife speaks of her pain at remaining childless while Kuntī, though equally a wife, has borne a child; nevertheless she expresses relief and good fortune that her husband has obtained progeny through Kuntī, ensuring continuation of the family line.
