Pāṇḍu’s Śrāddha, Satyavatī’s Withdrawal, and Childhood Rivalry
अग्नौ जुद्धन्नुभी कालावुभौ कालावुपस्पृशन् । कृश: परिमिताहारश्लीरचर्मजटाधर:,दोनों समय स्नान-संध्या और अग्निहोत्र करूँगा। चिथड़े, मृगचर्म और जटा धारण करूँगा। बहुत थोड़ा आहार ग्रहण करके शरीरसे दुर्बल हो जाऊँगा

Sinabi ni Vaiśampāyana: “Mag-aalay ako ng handog sa banal na apoy, at gaganapin ang mga itinakdang ritwal ng paglilinis sa dalawang sandali ng pagsalubong ng araw—umaga at gabi—nang walang pagkukulang. Magsusuot ako ng punit-punit na damit, balat ng usa, at buhok na nakabuhol; at sa pagkain na sukat lamang, ako’y papayat—yakap ang pagpapakasakit at pagpipigil-sa-sarili bilang dharma na pinili ko.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights tapas grounded in daily dharma: regular fire-offerings and purification at dawn and dusk, coupled with moderation in food and simple ascetic attire. Ethical emphasis falls on self-restraint, consistency in duty, and voluntary simplicity as a means of inner discipline.
A speaker (reported by Vaiśampāyana) describes adopting an ascetic regimen: performing oblations in the sacred fire, observing morning-and-evening rites, wearing austere clothing (tattered cloth, deerskin, matted hair), and eating sparingly to become physically lean—signaling a committed vow of austerity.
