Ādi Parva, Adhyāya 103 — Dhṛtarāṣṭra–Gāndhārī Vivāha: Proposal, Consent, and the Vow

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights kṣatriya-dharma in practice: disciplined, proportionate engagement in battle, where skill and steadiness are valued alongside courage. Bhīṣma’s controlled response—systematically wounding each opponent—models composure under pressure rather than reckless violence.

Bhīṣma counters a group of kings by striking each of them with three arrows. In response, each king shoots Bhīṣma with five arrows, escalating the exchange while maintaining the formal rhythm of battlefield retaliation.
