Nābhāga’s Inheritance, Śiva’s Verdict, and the Rise of Ambarīṣa—Prelude to Durvāsā’s Offense
भ्रातरोऽभाङ्क्त किं मह्यं भजाम पितरं तव । त्वां ममार्यास्तताभाङ्क्षुर्मा पुत्रक तदादृथा: ॥ २ ॥
bhrātaro ’bhāṅkta kiṁ mahyaṁ bhajāma pitaraṁ tava tvāṁ mamāryās tatābhāṅkṣur mā putraka tad ādṛthāḥ
Nagtanong si Nābhāga, “Mga kapatid, ano ang ibinigay ninyo sa akin bilang bahagi sa ari-arian ng ama?” Sumagot ang mga nakatatanda, “Ang bahagi mo ay ang ama.” Nang lumapit si Nābhāga sa ama at nagsabi, “Ama, ibinigay kayo ng mga kuya bilang bahagi ko,” sinabi ng ama, “Anak, huwag kang umasa sa mapanlinlang nilang salita; hindi ako iyong pag-aari.”
This verse models steadiness and dharma: even when rejected by brothers, one should not become bitter, but continue honoring rightful duties and elders’ intentions.
She reassures him that the situation is not a personal failure; elders had sanctioned and desired the match/decision, so he should remain composed and act righteously.
When facing family conflict, avoid resentment, stay respectful in duty, and keep emotional balance—respond with integrity rather than retaliation.
