Yayāti, Devayānī, Śarmiṣṭhā, and the Exchange of Youth: The Unsatisfied Nature of Desire

यैरिदं तपसा सृष्टं मुखं पुंस: परस्य ये । धार्यते यैरिह ज्योति: शिव: पन्था: प्रदर्शित: ॥ १२ ॥ यान् वन्दन्त्युपतिष्ठन्ते लोकनाथा: सुरेश्वरा: । भगवानपि विश्वात्मा पावन: श्रीनिकेतन: ॥ १३ ॥ वयं तत्रापि भृगव: शिष्योऽस्या न: पितासुर: । अस्मद्धार्यं धृतवती शूद्रो वेदमिवासती ॥ १४ ॥

yair idaṁ tapasā sṛṣṭaṁ mukhaṁ puṁsaḥ parasya ye dhāryate yair iha jyotiḥ śivaḥ panthāḥ pradarśitaḥ

Kabilang kami sa mga kwalipikadong brāhmaṇa, na tinatanggap bilang mukha ng Kataas-taasang Personalidad ng Diyos. Nilikha ng mga brāhmaṇa ang buong uniberso sa pamamagitan ng kanilang pagpapakasakit, at lagi nilang iniingatan ang Ganap na Katotohanan sa kaibuturan ng kanilang mga puso. Itinuro nila ang landas ng magandang kapalaran, ang landas ng sibilisasyong Vedic. Dahil sila lamang ang mga bagay na karapat-dapat sambahin sa mundong ito, sila ay inaalayan ng mga panalangin at sinasamba maging ng mga dakilang demigod at ng Kataas-taasang Panginoon mismo. At kami ay higit na kagalang-galang dahil kami ay nasa dinastiya ni Bhṛgu. Gayunpaman, kahit na ang ama ng babaeng ito, na kabilang sa mga demonyo, ay aming disipulo, isinuot niya ang aking damit, na parang isang śūdra na umaako ng kaalamang Vedic.
