न शान्ता नापि घोरास् ते न मूढाश् चाविशेषिणः भूततन्मात्रसर्गो ऽयम् अहंकारात् तु तामसात्

na śāntā nāpi ghorās te na mūḍhāś cāviśeṣiṇaḥ bhūtatanmātrasargo 'yam ahaṃkārāt tu tāmasāt

จากอหังการะฝ่ายตมัส จึงเกิดวิวัฒน์เฉพาะนี้—การปรากฏของตนมาตระและภูตะ ทั้งหลายมิใช่สงบสว่าง มิใช่ดุร้ายรุนแรง และมิใช่ทึบไร้แยกแยะ เพราะสภาวะถูกกำหนดด้วยตมัสที่เป็นเหตุ
