The renunciant should abandon the water-pot, the begging-bowl, the carrying-sling, the triple staff, footwear, the cold-protecting cloak, and the loincloth-covering; likewise the purifier (ring/grass), the ‘knowledge-cloth’, and the upper garment; also the sacred thread and even the Vedas—he should renounce all that. Bathing, drinking, and purification he should perform with water that is pure. He should lie on the sandbank of a river, or sleep in temples. He should not excessively torment the body by pleasure and pain. When praised he should not be delighted; when blamed he should not curse others.
