गौतमविघ्नप्रकरणम्
Episode of Obstacles to Gautama; Gaṇeśa’s Appearing Through Misguided Worship
ऋषय ऊचुः । त्वया यदि वरो देयो गौतमस्स्वाश्रमाद्बहिः । निष्कास्यं नो ऋषिभिः परिभर्त्स्य तथा कुरु
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ | tvayā yadi varo deyo gautamassvāśramādbahiḥ | niṣkāsyaṃ no ṛṣibhiḥ paribhartsya tathā kuru
The assembled sages (ṛṣis)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Umāpati
It highlights how even learned sages can fall into hostility and adharma when pride and rivalry arise; Shaiva teaching emphasizes purity of intention, restraint of speech, and reverence toward the righteous, since wrongdoing toward a devotee becomes a spiritual obstacle.
In Jyotirlinga-centered Kotirudra narratives, outer piety (ritual status or ascetic reputation) is tested by inner virtues. True devotion to Saguna Shiva is shown by compassion and dharmic conduct, not by condemning or expelling the virtuous.
A practical takeaway is vāṅ-niyama (discipline of speech): before japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), one should avoid harsh rebuke and cultivate śānti and kṣamā; on Mahashivratri, pair mantra-japa with repentance and forgiveness.
