The deity: Sūrya as Bṛhat/Vibhrāṭ, with Soma as sustenance

  • In the VedaSūrya is hailed as ‘the best of lights’ and ‘supreme Light,’ the Vast (Bṛhat) and universal-radiant (Viśvabhrāṭ), spreading wide unfaltering power and making vision possible. He is depicted as drinking Soma’s honey, guarding beings by his own self-being, and shining in many forms.
  • Cosmic functionIlluminator and regulator: he enables sight and order, sustains vitality (āyus), protects progeny and becomings (prajāḥ), and upholds the worlds as the visible sign of cosmic law and workmanship.
  • Inner significanceThe awakening intelligence and clarity that ‘drinks’ the Soma of delight/essence—stabilizing life-force, strengthening resolve, and expanding consciousness toward the luminous ‘rocana’ (bright heaven).

  • No secure additional hymns can be attributed with confidence due to the ‘unknown rishi’ ascription in the indices; the style aligns broadly with several anonymous Book 10 cosmological/light hymns.

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the Soma (or symbolic Soma such as sweet libation) and seat the rite with calm attention to ‘light’ (jyotis).
  • Invoke the Great Light (Bṛhat/Vibhrāṭ) and invite it to ‘drink the Soma-honey’—i.e., to accept the offered essence.
  • Pray for the fixing of āyus (life-force) in the yajamāna (lord of sacrifice), ‘unshaken’ in purpose and health.
  • Contemplate the Sun as protector and manifold radiance, asking for safeguarding of progeny, works, and right becoming.
  • Conclude with the vision of ascent to the luminous realm (rocana of heaven) and the recognition that all worlds are upheld by cosmic workmanship and the host of gods.

Offerings

  • Soma libation (or madhu/sweet offering as substitute)
  • Ghee/clarified butter into fire (common ancillary offering)
  • Water oblation (ārghya) to Sūrya (optional, especially at dawn)

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn praises Sūrya, described as the Great and all-shining Light (Bṛhat, Vibhrāṭ). Soma appears as the nourishing offering the Light ‘drinks’.

In ritual terms it means the deity accepts the Soma offering. Symbolically, it suggests the supreme Light receives the essence of delight/strength and then establishes vitality and clarity in the sacrificer and the world.

It widens the vision from the visible Sun to the cosmic order: the worlds are upheld through universal workmanship (Viśvakarman) and supported by the collective divine powers (Viśve Devāḥ).
