Inside Sukta 125

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Vāk declares her intimate companionship with all divine hosts and her role as the supporter of the major gods (10.125.1).

  2. Development

She reveals herself as the power behind worship, strength, and inspired cognition, distributing gifts and making chosen individuals mighty—brahmā, ṛṣi, and sumedhā (notably 10.125.5).

  3. Climax

The hymn reaches a cosmic self-revelation: Vāk expands and moves like the Wind, grasping all worlds—surpassing heaven and earth in her magnitude (10.125.8).

  4. Where it settles

The vision settles into the recognition that Speech is not merely human utterance but a universal, divine agency pervading ritual, knowledge, and existence.

The deity: Vāc as Devī

  • Cosmic functionShe is the ordering and manifesting principle of reality—making prayer efficacious, empowering kingship and priesthood, and serving as the medium through which intention becomes rite, knowledge becomes hymn, and creation becomes intelligible.
  • Inner significanceVāc symbolizes awakened consciousness expressed as truthful, potent speech—clarity, inspiration, and the inner voice that can elevate a person into insight (ṛṣihood), discernment (sumedhā), and spiritual authority.
