Vali’s Pursuit of Mayavi and the Cave Episode
हत्वा शत्रुं स मे भ्राता प्रविवेश पुरं तदा4.9.24।।मानयंस्तं महात्मानं यथावच्चाभ्यवादयम्।उक्ताश्च नाशिषस्तेन सन्तुष्टेनान्तरात्मना4.9.25।।
mānayaṃs taṃ mahātmānaṃ yathāvac cābhyavādayam | uktāś ca nāśiṣas tena santuṣṭenāntarātmanā || 4.9.25 ||
ข้าพเจ้าได้ถวายความเคารพแด่มหาบุรุษนั้น และกราบทักทายอย่างสมควรตามธรรมเนียม; แต่ท่านมิได้เอ่ยถ้อยคำอวยพรแก่ข้าพเจ้า เพราะดวงใจภายในของท่านยังมิได้ปลื้มปีติอย่างแท้จริง
'That mighty warrior(Vali) came out, pushing aside all the women-folk. I too followed him due to my affection towards him.
Dharma is not merely external courtesy; inner intention matters. Blessings and goodwill should match outward forms of respect—otherwise relationships corrode through hypocrisy.
After Vālī’s return, Sugrīva performs the customary respectful greeting, but perceives Vālī’s inner displeasure through the absence of sincere blessings.
Sugrīva’s propriety and respect for elders; the verse also stresses sincerity (inner truth) as a moral requirement.
