FAQs

This verse preserves the Purāṇic tradition that associates Kārtikeya with the Kṛttikās (the Pleiades), presenting them as his nurturing mothers and thus identifying him as their “offspring” in sacred memory.

Devala is identified here as a muni (sage), described through a lineage statement: he is the son of Ṛbhu, connected to Pratyūṣa—typical of Purāṇic cataloging of sages and their descent.

The shloka functions as a concise genealogical/identificatory note, linking prominent figures (a deity and a sage) to their traditional origins, which is characteristic of creation-era catalogues in the Sṛṣṭikhaṇḍa.
