Concept: Time (Kṛtānta) ends all embodied life; therefore dharma and tapas are the sustaining disciplines across all stages of life.

Sandhi Resolution Notes: धर्मस्तपश्चाहं = धर्मः + तपः + च + अहम्; सर्वाश्रमनिवासिनाम् is a tatpuruṣa compound (सर्व + आश्रम + निवासिन्).
Kṛtānta literally means “the one who brings things to their end,” a Purāṇic epithet closely linked with death and cosmic termination. The verse equates this ending power with Kāla (Time), implying that time itself is the universal force that ripens and ends all embodied existence.
It presents Dharma (right order/duty) and Tapas (disciplined spiritual effort) as universal principles present for all who live within any āśrama—student, householder, forest-dweller, or renunciant—showing that spiritual law and discipline are not restricted to one life-stage.
It teaches humility and urgency: since Time ends all beings, one should live according to Dharma and cultivate Tapas in whatever stage of life one is in, rather than postponing ethical living and spiritual practice.
