Merit, Hospitality, and Release from Hell
गताहं पापभावेन दीनाहं च निराश्रया । सुदेवोवाच । किं कृतं हि मया भद्रे सुकृतं पुण्यसंभवम्
gatāhaṃ pāpabhāvena dīnāhaṃ ca nirāśrayā | sudevovāca | kiṃ kṛtaṃ hi mayā bhadre sukṛtaṃ puṇyasaṃbhavam
“ข้าตกต่ำด้วยภาวะแห่งบาป ข้าทรุดโทรมและไร้ที่พึ่ง” สุเทวะกล่าวว่า “โอสตรีผู้เป็นมงคล เราได้ทำกุศลใดเล่า—บุญใดที่ก่อกำเนิดบุญ?”

Concept: Even when one feels fallen and unsupported, hidden merit (sukṛta) may exist; inquiry into that merit becomes the doorway to prescribed remedial dharma (often vrata, dāna, tīrtha, bhakti).
Application: When someone confesses despair, respond with compassionate curiosity and practical steps; reflect on small good deeds and build consistent practice from them.

The verse contains two speech turns: first an unnamed woman laments her sinful state and lack of refuge; then Sudeva asks what meritorious deed he has performed that yields spiritual merit.
It contrasts a fall into pāpa-bhāva (sinful disposition) with the search for sukṛta (virtuous action), highlighting accountability for one’s inner tendencies and the transformative value of merit-producing deeds.
In the Bhūmi-khaṇḍa, moral causality (karma), the consequences of pāpa and puṇya, and dialogue-based instruction are recurring themes; this verse frames that inquiry through personal lament and a request to understand the source of merit.
