Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds dharmic propriety in marriage alliances: a king offers his daughter in gratitude and honor, while the recipient must consider ethical and relational boundaries before accepting. It sets up a discussion on what constitutes a rightful (dharma-consistent) acceptance of a marital gift.

After Arjuna’s service in Virāṭa’s court and the protection of the Matsya kingdom, King Virāṭa offers his daughter (Uttarā) to Arjuna as a bride. Virāṭa questions why Arjuna, addressed as the foremost Pāṇḍava, hesitates to accept her as his wife.
