Educational Q&A

Fear and hardship strip away arrogance and social posturing; in crisis, even warriors adopt the posture of surrender (loosened hair, folded hands). The verse highlights the ethical contrast between pride in power and the humility that arises when one recognizes vulnerability—especially when cut off from one’s own land and support.

After the Kaurava forces scatter in different directions, some soldiers—frightened, hungry, thirsty, and exhausted—emerge and gather, appearing with loosened hair and folded hands, standing in a supplicatory manner. The narrator (Vaiśampāyana) describes their distressed condition and mental confusion due to being away from home.
