अहिंसा सत्यवचनं सर्वभूतहितं परम् । अहिंसा परमो धर्म: स च सत्ये प्रतिष्ठित: । सत्ये कृत्वा प्रतिष्ठां तु प्रवर्तन्ते प्रवृत्तय:,अहिंसा और सत्यभाषण--ये समस्त प्राणियोंके लिये अत्यन्त हितकर हैं। अहिंसा सबसे महान् धर्म है, परंतु वह सत्यमें ही प्रतिष्ठित है। सत्यके ही आधारपर श्रेष्ठ पुरुषोंके सभी कार्य आरम्भ होते हैं
ahiṃsā satyavacanaṃ sarvabhūtahitaṃ param | ahiṃsā paramo dharmaḥ sa ca satye pratiṣṭhitaḥ | satye kṛtvā pratiṣṭhāṃ tu pravartante pravṛttayaḥ |
อหิงสาและวาจาสัตย์เป็นคุณธรรมอันเกื้อกูลยิ่งแก่สรรพสัตว์ทั้งปวง อหิงสาเป็นธรรมสูงสุด แต่ยืนมั่นได้ก็ด้วยตั้งอยู่บนสัจจะ เมื่อสัจจะถูกตั้งเป็นรากฐานแล้ว บัณฑิตผู้ประเสริฐย่อมเริ่มกิจทั้งหลาย และการกระทำของเขาย่อมดำเนินไปบนหนทางอันมั่นคง
