Ritvij-Dharma, the Norm of Dakṣiṇā, and the Higher Meaning of Tapas

Educational Q&A

Yudhiṣṭhira argues that ethical injunctions about giving or repayment must be interpreted with context: in distress (āpaddharma), a rule that ignores a person’s actual capacity (śakti) becomes morally harsh and potentially unjust.

In the Śānti Parva’s discussions on dharma, Yudhiṣṭhira questions a scriptural-sounding rule concerning wealth given as a due/fee or repayment, objecting that it does not align with emergency-dharma principles because it fails to consider the giver’s means.
