Śara-śayyā-sthita-bhīṣma-saṃvāda-prastāvaḥ

The Prelude to Questioning Bhīṣma on the Bed of Arrows

etasmāt kāraṇād bhīṣma matir divyā mayā hi te | dattā yaśo viprathayet kathaṁ bhūyas taveti ha ||

Educational Q&A

Divine insight is portrayed as a boon granted to support dharmic purpose: true renown (yaśas) arises from higher discernment and right counsel, and such fame is meant to expand through beneficial conduct and instruction rather than mere power.

Vāyudeva addresses Bhīṣma and explains the reason for granting him divinely empowered understanding: it is intended to ensure that Bhīṣma’s reputation and influence—grounded in duty and wisdom—spread widely and grow further in the world.
