भीष्म उवाच

भीष्म (Bhīṣma)
पाद्य (pādya—foot-washing water, as an object of hospitality)

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches atithi-dharma: one should receive a guest with the full courtesies of hospitality (beginning with pādya) and honor them with the highest respect, treating service itself as a moral duty.

In Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on righteous conduct. Here he describes the proper way to welcome and honor a guest—accepting the offered items of reception and then worshipping/serving with utmost reverence.
