Aśmagīta: Janaka’s Inquiry on Loss, Kāla, and the Limits of Control (अश्मगीता)

इस प्रकार श्रीमह्या भारत शान्तिपर्वके अन्तर्गत राजधर्मानुशासनपर्वमें व्यासवाक्यविषयक सत्ताईसवाँ अध्याय पूरा हुआ,दृश्यते हि युवैवेह विनश्यन्‌ वसुमान्‌ नरः । दरिद्रश्न॒ परिक्लिष्ट: शतवर्षो जरान्वित: इस जगतमें धनवान्‌ मनुष्य भी जवानीमें ही नष्ट होता दिखायी देता है और क्लेशमें पड़ा हुआ दरिद्र भी सौ वर्षोतक जीवित रहकर अत्यन्त वृद्धावस्थामें मरता देखा जाता है

dṛśyate hi yuvāivēha vinaśyan vasumān naraḥ | daridraś ca parikliṣṭaḥ śatavarṣo jarānvitaḥ ||

ในโลกนี้เห็นได้ว่า แม้คนมั่งคั่งก็อาจพินาศตั้งแต่วัยหนุ่ม; ส่วนคนยากไร้ที่ถูกทุกข์โหมกระหน่ำกลับมีชีวิตยืนถึงร้อยปี และตายเมื่อชราภาพยิ่งนัก.
