यच्च ते मनसि वर्तते परं यत्र चास्ति तव संशय: क्वचित्‌ | श्रूयतामयमहं तवाग्रत: पुत्र कि हि कथयामि ते पुन:,पुत्र! तुम्हारे मनमें जो वस्तु सर्वश्रेष्ठ जान पड़ती हो तथा जिसके विषयमें तुम्हें कहीं संशय हो रहा हो, उसे पूछो और उसके उत्तरमें मैं जो कुछ तुम्हारे सामने कहूँ, उसे सुनो! बोलो, मैं फिर तुम्हें किस विषयका उपदेश करूँ प्रहर्ष: प्रीतिरानन्द: साम्यं स्वस्थात्मचित्तता । अकस्माद्‌ यदि वा कस्माद्‌ वर्तन्ते सात्त्विका गुणा: जब अतिशय हर्ष, प्रेम, आनन्द, समता और स्वस्थचित्तता--ये सदगुण अकस्मात्‌ या किसी कारणवश विकसित हों, तब समझना चाहिये कि ये सात्विक गुण हैं

vyāsa uvāca | yac ca te manasi vartate paraṁ yatra cāsti tava saṁśayaḥ kvacit | śrūyatām ayam ahaṁ tavāgrataḥ putra ki hi kathayāmi te punaḥ | praharṣaḥ prītir ānandaḥ sāmyaṁ svasthātmacittatā | akasmād yadi vā kasmād vartante sāttvikā guṇāḥ |

วยาสะกล่าวว่า “ลูกเอ๋ย สิ่งใดในใจเจ้าที่เห็นว่าสูงสุด และเรื่องใดที่ยังทำให้เจ้าสงสัยอยู่ ณ ที่ใดก็ตาม—จงถามมา จงฟังต่อหน้าเรา แล้วบอกเถิดว่าเราควรสั่งสอนเจ้าอีกในเรื่องใด เมื่อความปลื้มปีติยิ่ง ความรักใคร่ ความปีติสุข ความเสมอภาค และจิตที่มั่นคงผ่องใสบังเกิด—ไม่ว่าจะเกิดขึ้นฉับพลันหรือด้วยเหตุใด—พึงรู้ว่าเป็นคุณธรรมที่เกิดจาก ‘สัตตวะ’”
