Educational Q&A

Truth (satya) is presented as the highest principle: it is identified with Brahman, equated with spiritual austerity, described as the creative force behind beings, the support of the world, and the means to attain heavenly realms. The verse elevates truthfulness from a moral rule to a cosmic and spiritual foundation.

Within the Mokṣa-dharma discussions of the Śānti Parva, the sage Bhṛgu instructs his interlocutor by praising the supremacy of truth. The passage functions as a doctrinal statement on why satya is central to dharma and to favorable outcomes in this world and the next.
