Adhyāya 180: Jīva, Śarīra, and the Fire Analogy

iti bhūtāni sampaśyann anuṣaktāni mṛtyunā | sarvasāmānyago vidvān kṛtakṛtyaḥ sukhaṃ svape ||

Educational Q&A

Because death binds all beings without exception, the wise person cultivates equal-mindedness toward everyone, completes one’s rightful duties, and rests inwardly at peace rather than clinging to partiality or fear.

In the Shanti Parva’s instruction, Bhishma is explaining a standpoint of mature wisdom: by contemplating the universal condition of mortality, he claims the serenity of one who has fulfilled his obligations and now abides in impartiality and calm.
