Apaddharma Determination: Dialogue of Viśvāmitra and the Śvapaca
न ते सौम्य भयं कार्य जीविष्यसि यथासुखम् | अहं त्वामुद्धरिष्यामि यदि मां न जिघांससि
na te saumya bhayaṁ kārya jīviṣyasi yathāsukham | ahaṁ tvām uddhariṣyāmi yadi māṁ na jighāṁsasi ||
ดูก่อนผู้สุภาพ เจ้าไม่จำต้องหวาดกลัว เจ้าจะมีชีวิตอยู่อย่างผาสุก หากเจ้าละความประสงค์จะฆ่าข้าเสีย ข้าจะกู้เจ้าจากภยันตรายนี้
भीष्म उवाच
Fear is dispelled through assurance and ethical restraint: if one abandons violent intent, protection and deliverance become possible. The verse frames safety and well-being as arising from renouncing the impulse to harm.
Bhīṣma addresses someone respectfully as “saumya,” calming them and offering rescue from danger on the condition that they give up the intention to kill him—turning a hostile stance into a path for protection.
