अनहनिपि चैवान्यान्मन्यते श्रीमतो जनान्‌ | एतस्मात्‌ कारणादेतद्‌ दु:खं भूयो<नुवर्तते,वह दूसरे धनी मनुष्योंको धनके अयोग्य मानता है। इसी कारण उसका यह ईर्ष्पयाजनक दुःख सदा उसके पीछे लगा रहता है

anahanipi caivānyān manyate śrīmato janān | etasmāt kāraṇād etad duḥkhaṃ bhūyo 'nuvartate ||

ภีษมะกล่าวว่า—แม้มิได้มีเหตุยั่วยุ เขากลับเห็นว่าผู้มั่งคั่งอื่น ๆ ไม่สมควรแก่ทรัพย์ ด้วยเหตุนี้เอง ความทุกข์อันเกิดจากริษยาจึงหวนกลับมาซ้ำแล้วซ้ำเล่า คอยติดตามเขาไม่วาง

Educational Q&A

Envy is self-perpetuating: when a person devalues others' prosperity as undeserved, the resulting sorrow does not end but repeatedly follows him. The ethical counsel is to abandon jealous judgment and cultivate contentment and right discernment.

In Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma and inner discipline. Here he describes the psychology of an envious person: even unprovoked, he resents the wealthy and therefore remains trapped in recurring misery.
