Kapālamocana-tīrtha (Auśanasa) and Balarāma’s Sarasvatī Pilgrimage
tad dṛṣṭvā vrīḍito rājan sa muniḥ pādayor gataḥ | mene devaṃ mahādevam idaṃ covāca vismitaḥ ||
Seeing that, the sage—ashamed, O King—fell at the feet (of the Lord). Recognizing him as the divine Mahādeva, he spoke these words in astonishment. The scene underscores the ethical force of humility: when one realizes the presence of the highest divinity, pride gives way to reverence and self-correction.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights humility and ethical self-restraint: upon realizing the presence of Mahādeva, the sage feels shame (vrīḍā) and responds with surrender at the Lord’s feet, showing that true wisdom expresses itself as reverence rather than ego.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that a sage, after witnessing a striking event, becomes ashamed, falls at the feet of the figure before him, recognizes him as Mahādeva (Śiva), and then speaks in amazement.
