hā hā gacchanti no nāthāḥ samavekṣadhvam īdṛśam | aho dhik kuruvṛddhānāṃ bālānām iva ceṣṭitam mahārāja ||

Vidura reports the citizens’ anguished outcry as the Pāṇḍavas depart: “Alas, alas—our lords are leaving! Look at this shameful spectacle! Fie upon the elders of the Kurus, behaving like children, O King.” The lament underscores a moral inversion: those expected to uphold restraint and dharma instead act from greed and impulsiveness, driving the rightful heirs into exile and leaving the people feeling orphaned and betrayed.

Educational Q&A

When elders and rulers abandon restraint and dharma, society experiences moral disorder: the people lose their sense of protection and legitimacy. The verse condemns greed-driven, childish decision-making by those who should embody mature judgment.

As the Pāṇḍavas are forced out, the townspeople cry out in grief and indignation. Vidura recounts their words, censuring the Kuru elders for allowing (or enabling) an unjust expulsion that leaves the populace feeling bereft of rightful protectors.
