दुर्योधन उवाच
The verse frames envy as ethically unwholesome and irrational: prosperity and royal enjoyment are presented as the result of one’s rightful share and destiny, so resentment toward a virtuous rival (Yudhishthira) is discouraged—at least on the surface.
In the Sabha Parva, Shakuni counsels Duryodhana regarding his burning jealousy of the Pandavas’ success. He tells Duryodhana not to resent Yudhishthira, implying the Pandavas are merely enjoying what is allotted to them—while the broader context is Shakuni’s political maneuvering that will soon channel Duryodhana’s envy into the dice-game plot.
