अध्याय १: महाप्रस्थानारम्भः

The Commencement of the Great Departure

अयं व: फाल्गुनो भ्राता गाण्डीवं परमायुधम्‌ । परित्यज्य वने यातु नानेनार्थोडस्ति कश्नन,“तुम्हारे भाई अर्जुनको चाहिये कि ये इस उत्तम आयुध गाण्डीव धनुषको त्यागकर वनमें जायँ। अब इन्हें इसकी कोई आवश्यकता नहीं है

ayaṃ vaḥ phālguno bhrātā gāṇḍīvaṃ paramāyudham | parityajya vane yātu nānenārtho 'sti kaścana ||

ไวศัมปายนะกล่าวว่า “ฟาลคุนะ (อรชุน) ผู้เป็นพี่น้องของพวกเจ้า พึงละทิ้งคันธนูกาณฑีวะอันเป็นอาวุธสูงสุด แล้วออกสู่ป่าเถิด บัดนี้สิ่งนั้นมิได้มีประโยชน์แก่เขาอีกต่อไป”
