अध्याय ९ — कर्णस्य प्रहारः, योधयुग्मनियोजनम्, शैनेय-कैकेययोर्युद्धविन्यासः
भ्रातृभावेन पृथिवीं भुड़क्ष्व पाण्ड्सुतैः सह । बाण-शय्यापर सोये हुए महात्मा भीष्मने अर्जुनसे पानी माँगा और उन्होंने इसके लिये पृथ्वीको छेद दिया। इस प्रकार पाण्डुपुत्र अर्जुनके द्वारा प्रकट की हुई उस जलधाराको देखकर महाबाहु भीष्मने दुर्योधनसे कहा--“तात! पाण्डवोंके साथ संधि कर लो। संधिसे वैरकी शान्ति हो जायगी, तुमलोगोंका यह युद्ध मेरे जीवनके साथ ही समाप्त हो जाय। तुम पाण्डवोंके साथ भ्रातृभाव बनाये रखकर पृथ्वीका उपभोग करो”
bhrātṛbhāvena pṛthivīṃ bhukṣva pāṇḍusutaiḥ saha |
จงเสวยและปกครองแผ่นดินร่วมกับโอรสแห่งปาณฑุด้วยจิตแห่งภราดรภาพ สันติด้วยการประนีประนอมจักระงับความพยาบาท และสงครามนี้จักสิ้นสุดลงพร้อมกับวาระชีวิตของเรา
