Educational Q&A

Political power is ethically justified only when aligned with dharma; when one’s claim is unrighteous, the proper course is to relinquish the kingdom to the rightful ruler, taking divine precedent (Viṣṇu restoring Indra’s sovereignty) as a model for restoring cosmic and social order.

Sañjaya conveys an admonition framed through a mythic comparison: as Viṣṇu once defeated the Daityas and Dānavas and returned the three worlds to Indra, so the speaker urges that the earth should be surrendered to King Yudhiṣṭhira—implying a call to end conflict by restoring rightful rule.
