कर्णनिधनवृत्तान्तनिवेदनम् | Reporting Karṇa’s Fall to Yudhiṣṭhira
वह बूढ़े माता-पिता तथा अन्य आश्रित जनोंका पालन-पोषण किया करता था। सदा अपने धर्ममें लगा रहता, सत्य बोलता और किसीकी निन्दा नहीं करता था ।। स कदाचिन्मृगं लिप्सुर्नाभ्यविन्दन्मृगं क्वचित् । अप: पिबन्तं ददशे श्वापदं प्राणचक्षुषम्,एक दिन वह पशुको मार लानेके लिये वनमें गया; किंतु कहीं किसी हिंसक पशुको न पा सका। इतनेहीमें उसे एक पानी पीता हुआ हिंसक जानवर दिखायी दिया, जो अंधा था, नाकसे सूँघकर ही आँखका काम निकाला करता था
sa kadācin mṛgaṁ lipsur nābhyavindan mṛgaṁ kvacit | apaḥ pibantaṁ dadarśa śvāpadaṁ prāṇacakṣuṣam ||
วันหนึ่งเขาออกไปในป่าเพื่อแสวงหาเหยื่อ แต่หาไม่พบเลยสักแห่ง ครั้นแล้วเขาเห็นสัตว์ดุร้ายตัวหนึ่งกำลังดื่มน้ำ—มันตาบอด และใช้อาศัยลมหายใจกับการดมกลิ่นทำหน้าที่แทนดวงตา
