अश्वत्थामा कुरूणां च ये प्रवीरा महारथा:
sañjaya uvāca | aśvatthāmā kurūṇāṃ ca ye pravīrā mahārathāḥ, aśvatthāmā kauravapakṣake pramukha-mahārathī vīraḥ śaurya-sampanna-mleccha-sainikaiḥ yuktaḥ nitya-matavāla-gajān varṣā-kāle meghān iva mada-dhārāṃ sravantān tāṃ ratha-senāṃ paścāt paścāt anvayāt |
สัญชัยกล่าวว่า—อัศวัตถามา พร้อมด้วยวีรชนผู้เลิศแห่งวงศ์กุรุ ผู้เป็นมหารถีทั้งหลาย ได้ติดตามกองทัพรถศึกนั้นไปเบื้องหลัง ในฝ่ายเการพ เขาเคลื่อนเป็นมหารถีผู้นำ มีทหารมเลจฉะผู้กล้าหาญดุดันร่วมขบวน และช้างศึกที่มึนเมาอยู่เนืองนิตย์ ปล่อยน้ำมันช้างไหลรินดุจเมฆฝนในฤดูวัสสา.
