Mahabharata (Gita Press) 7.175.51 - Drona Parva, Adhyaya 175, Shloka 51

Educational Q&A

The passage highlights battlefield dharma: when many are overwhelmed by fear and superior force, responsibility concentrates upon the one capable leader. Valor is framed as ethical duty—Bhīma is urged to act not for pride, but to protect allies and restore balance against unchecked violence.

At midnight, Karṇa’s intense barrage of arrows causes the Pāñcāla troops to break ranks and flee like deer chased by a lion. Vāyu addresses Bhīma, declaring that only Bhīma has the strength and courage to stop Karṇa’s advancing momentum on the battlefield.
