अजुन उवाच
The verse introduces a systematic ethical psychology: both discernment (buddhi) and steadfast resolve (dhṛti) are to be understood in three types, shaped by the guṇas—sattva (clarity), rajas (restless passion), and tamas (inertia). This prepares the listener to evaluate motives and inner stability, not merely outward actions.
The speaker addresses Arjuna by his epithet Dhanañjaya and signals a transition: after discussing earlier classifications, he now proposes to explain—fully and distinctly—the threefold divisions of buddhi and dhṛti according to the guṇas.
