इस प्रकार श्रीमह्मा भारत भीष्मपर्वके अन्तर्गत जम्बूण्डविनिर्माणपर्वमें सैन्यशिक्षणविषयक पहला अध्याय पूरा हुआ
vaiśampāyana uvāca
tataḥ pūrvāpare sainye samīkṣya bhagavān ṛṣiḥ |
sarvavedavidāṃ śreṣṭho vyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ ||
ไวศัมปายนะกล่าวว่า “ต่อมา ฤๅษีผู้เป็นพรหมฤทธิ์—วยาสะ โอรสแห่งสัตยวตี ผู้เลิศในหมู่นักรู้พระเวท—ได้ทอดพระเนตรกองทัพทั้งสองซึ่งตั้งประจันกันทางทิศตะวันออกและทิศตะวันตก ครั้นทรงประหนึ่งเห็นผลแห่งศึกอันน่าสะพรึงที่จะบังเกิด จึงทรงเตรียมเสด็จไปยังพระเจ้าธฤตราษฏระ โอรสแห่งวิจิตรวีรยะ.”
