Vaiśampāyana uvāca — āgaskāriṇam atyarthaṃ prasādaṃ kartum arhasi | “asya bālakasya pitāmahaḥ (Jayadrathaḥ) anāryaḥ nṛśaṃsaś ca tava cāparādhī āsīt | taṃ vismara, asmin bālake kṛpāṃ kuru” |

Educational Q&A

The verse urges mercy over inherited blame: even if an ancestor was cruel and culpable, one should restrain vengeance, set aside resentment, and extend compassion—especially toward an innocent child. Ethical strength is shown by forgiveness and measured justice.

A speaker (Vaiśampāyana) counsels a powerful listener to show special clemency to an offender and, in particular, not to punish a child for the wrongdoing of his grandfather Jayadratha, who had been an enemy and had wronged the listener.
