Educational Q&A

Bhīṣma teaches that the timing of śrāddha (ancestral rites) is believed to shape its fruits: performing on Navamī is associated with gains connected to single-hoofed animals, while performing on Daśamī is associated with the increase of cows—highlighting the dharma idea that ritual precision and appropriate observance yield specific, socially valued outcomes.

In the Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma, including śrāddha rules and their results. Here he lists the traditional ‘phala’ (fruits) of performing śrāddha on particular lunar days, contrasting the ninth and tenth days.
