Vipulopākhyāna—Ruci-rakṣā and Śakra’s Māyā (विपुलोपाख्यानम्—रुचिरक्षणं शक्रमाया च)
भीष्म उवाच क्रिया भवति केषांचिदुपांशुव्रतमुत्तमम् । यो यो याचेत यत् किज्चित् सर्व दद्याम इत्यपि
bhīṣma uvāca
kriyā bhavati keṣāñcid upāṃśu-vratam uttamam |
yo yo yāceta yat kiñcit sarvaṃ dadyām ity api ||
ภีษมะกล่าวว่า “โอ้ยุธิษฐิระ สำหรับบางคน การประกอบกิจ—เช่นหน้าที่ยัญพิธี ทักษิณาแก่ครู หรือการอุปถัมภ์ครอบครัว—คือสิ่งที่มุ่งหมาย; ส่วนบางคนถือว่าอุปางศุ คือพรตแห่งความสงบเงียบและการสำรวม เป็นวินัยอันสูงสุด. เพราะฉะนั้น ผู้มาขอจะขอสิ่งใดก็ตาม พึงตอบด้วยจิตว่า ‘เราจะให้’ และไม่ควรส่งผู้ใดกลับไปด้วยความผิดหวัง”
