Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds the ethical tension between kāma (desire) and self-mastery: an offer of wealth, ownership, and pleasure is presented as a test of discernment and restraint, inviting reflection on whether gratification should govern one’s choices or whether dharma and inner discipline should.

A speaker (attributed here to Aṣṭāvakra) directly proposes an intimate union, declaring the addressee to be the unquestioned ‘master’ of her and her possessions, and promising to satisfy all desires—an explicit scene of seduction/temptation framed as an offer of total availability and fulfillment.
