Aṣṭāvakra’s Visit to Kubera: Hospitality, Temptation, and the Ethics of Restraint (अष्टावक्र-वैश्रवणोपाख्यानम्)
ततो मां भगवान् प्रीत इदं वचनमत्रवीत् । वरं वृणीष्व भद्रें ते यस्ते मनसि वर्तते,“इससे प्रसन्न होकर भगवानने मुझसे कहा--“कृष्ण! तुम्हारा कल्याण हो। तुम्हारे मनसें जैसी रुचि हो, उसके अनुसार कोई वर माँगो”
tato māṁ bhagavān prīta idaṁ vacanam atravīt | varaṁ vṛṇīṣva bhadraṁ te yas te manasi vartate ||
แล้วพระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงพอพระทัย ตรัสแก่เราว่า “ขอความสวัสดีจงมีแก่เจ้า จงเลือกพรเถิด—สิ่งใดดำรงอยู่ในใจของเจ้า ก็จงขอสิ่งนั้น”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights divine grace responding to devotion or service: when the Lord is pleased, he invites the devotee to choose a boon, emphasizing benevolence (bhadraṁ te) and the ethical idea that blessings follow sincere conduct.
Vaiśampāyana reports that the Lord, satisfied with him, addresses him directly and offers a boon, inviting him to ask for whatever wish is present in his mind.
