Dāna-Śreṣṭhatā: On the Superiority of Giving
Maitreya–Vyāsa Exemplum
सकृज्जातिगुणोपेत: संगत्या गृहमागत: । अतिथि: पूजितो ब्रह्मंस्तेन मां नाजहात् स्मृति:,मुझे पहलेके अपने किये हुए शुभकर्मोंके फलका अबतक अनुभव नहीं हुआ है। पूर्वजन्ममें मैंने केवल अपनी बूढ़ी माताकी सेवा की थी तथा एक दिन किसीके साथ हो जानेसे अपने घरपर आये हुए ब्राह्मण अतिथिका जो अपने जातीय गुणोंसे सम्पन्न थे, स्वागत-सत्कार किया था। ब्रह्मन्! उसी पुण्यके प्रभावसे मुझे आजतक पूर्वजन्मकी स्मृति छोड़ न सकी है
sakṛj jātiguṇopetaḥ saṅgatyā gṛham āgataḥ | atithiḥ pūjito brahman tena māṁ nājahāt smṛtiḥ ||
ครั้งหนึ่งโดยบังเอิญ พราหมณ์ผู้ประกอบด้วยคุณธรรมอันสมควรแก่ชาติกำเนิดได้มาถึงเรือนของข้า ข้าได้บูชาและต้อนรับเขาตามควร โอพราหมณ์ เพราะกรรมนั้นเอง ความทรงจำจึงยังไม่ละจากข้าจนบัดนี้
